Coins with SPI in Runes on obverse

All of the coins in this section of the research have the Runes cut in the above fashion. Sometimes Runes are cut reversed or even upside-down. A mixture of these variations can be seen in one short piece of text. All SPI Runes are cut/read in a clockwise direction

Allocation into Types

There were nine coins with the runes SPI, seven coins with the runes EPA and two coins with the runes WES.  I will allocate the SPI coins with type numbers R9/001 to R9/059, the coins EPA with numbers R9/060 to R9/099 and the two “W” coins with the numbers R9/100 and above. The runes on coin (ID 17) were unclear, consequently this coin has not been allocated a type number. The symbols behind the head on coin ID14 were unclear, it was not allocated a type number. Coins ID 14 and ID 17 do have some similarities.

Coins with runes SPI

All coins with SPI had the dies cut in a clockwise fashion. Five coins had two pellets close by the bottom of the “S” rune; ID 3, 4, 6, 11, 13. These coins were subdivided into four different Types.

 Type R9/010

These coins had the combination of symbols of two forward pointing chevrons above a single annulet behind the head. There was only a crown line. On the reverse there was a Tufa above the standard and unbarred crosses to other sides and four corner lines, one at each corner. There were two “T’s” opposing and two triangles of pellets  around a central annulet within the standard. Coins ID 3 and ID 6 were allocated to this class. See image below.

Type R9/014

Like the above Type this coin (ID 11) had the combination of symbols of two forward pointing chevrons above a single annulet behind the head. There was only a crown line. On the reverse there was a Tufa above the standard and unbarred crosses to other sides and four corner lines, one at each corner. There were two “T’s” opposing and two triangles of pellets  around a central annulet within the standard, however, the symbols were rotated around the central annulet by 90°. See image below.

Type R9/020

There was only one coin in this type. The obverse was very similar to types R9/010 and R9/014. The reverse had a Tufa above the standard but it contained only one pellet. Within the standard were opposing “L’s” and opposing single pellets. Outside of the standard were what appeared unbarred crosses but there were no pellets to either side of the central bar of the “cross”. Coin ID 4 was allocated to this type number. See image below.

Type R9/030

Again there was only one coin in this type, ID 13. The obverse was very similar to other coins in the R9/010, R9/014 and R9/020 types. All have a single large pellet as a lip. However, the reverse had a Tufa above the standard which contained three pellets, within the standard were opposing “L’s” and what appeared to be two pellets in one corner and a single pellet in the opposite corner. There were unbarred crosses to the other three sides below the Tufa. Four angled corner lines were present. See image below.

Coins with runes SPI without a Tufa on the Reverse.

All coins with SPI had the dies cut in a clockwise fashion. Four coins did not have any pellets by the S rune; ID 8, ID 12, ID 16 and ID 18. These coins were subdivided into two different Types.

R9/040

Two coins were given this type number, ID 8 and ID 16. These coins had two forward pointing chevrons above an annulet behind the head. They had three crown lines above the head with both ends of the first crown line ending in a large pellet. These single pellets formed part of the crown line and were not free-standing like those in the previous groups. A large single pellet formed the lip. On the reverse of the coins in this group there were four corner lines and four mid-point crosses pommée outside of the standard. Two “L’s” above the central annulet and two angled lines below the annulet were inside the standard. The reverse flan looks very similar to an R8 type. See image below.

R9/050

There were also two coins in this type, coins ID 12 and ID 18. These coins had a forward pointing chevron with an annulet both above and below it behind the head. There was also an annulet above the runes in front of the head. There were two large pellets below the rather pointed nose. The middle exergual line consisted of much more pronounced pellets than the one above and below it. The obverse of this type has many similarities of the R8 iconography. The reverse flan also looks very similar to an R8 type. See image below
